Installing Windows 10 on MacBook is Now Available

Although it sounds a bit abnormal – installing Windows 10 to a MacBook – it is now a thing.

Apple recently fixed a problem with the boot utility Boot Camp Assistance that allows other operating systems to be used on their computers. The new MacBook Pro 16-inch drivers were apparently too new to be able to run Boot Camp.

According to LifeHacker, using Boot Camp is really easy:

As part of the Boot Camp process, you’ll need to make sure you’ve downloaded an .ISO of the latest Windows 10 version, and you’ll want to make sure you have at least 40GB or so of free space on your drive for the new Windows partition.

Other than that, setting up Windows 10 on your MacBook is a pretty easy process. Don’t forget to hold down Option when you’re booting up your MacBook so you can quickly switch to one operating system or the other (or set your default startup disk for whatever you normally use via System Preferences).

Boot Camp Assistance works the best when your MacBook has the latest MacOS version. To verify you have it, go to the Apple Menu, then click on the Software Update.

Realtek Driver Won’t Work on Windows 10 – Here’s a Fix

If you use Realtek Bluetooth drivers, you may be having issues with updating your Windows 10 operating system. That itself is due to the safeguard hold that was put into place in May of 2019 by Microsoft because of outdated driver versions. Microsoft states, “You will need to update to driver version 1.5.1012 or later to remove this safeguard hold. Any earlier version of the driver is affected by this issue.”

On November 15th, however, Microsoft removed the hold with affected versions, according to their statement on Microsoft Docs. And you can install Windows 10 after updating the Realtek Bluetooth drivers. This process can take up to 48 hours, so don’t be discouraged if you’re not able to install right away.

If you need to download and install the drivers manually to disable the compatibility hold, here’s the step-by-step process:

• Download both of the Realtek Bluetooth radio drivers to your preferred folder: Driver 1Driver 2Note: We recommend downloading them to your Documents folder.
• Open File Explorer. If there is no file explorer icon in the task bar, select the search box and enter file explorer and select it.
• Within File Explorer, go the the Documents folder or the folder you downloaded the drivers to.
• Find and double click or double tap on the file named 068de0d6-6ac2-473a-8cbd-bd449cd5c97c_942eec5828662eecc6b98cc2706658bf2433717c.cab
• Select CTRL+a on the keyboard. This should select all of the files
• Right click or long press on any of the files and select Extract.
• Select the New folder button and rename it Realtek Bluetooth.
• Select the Extract button.
• In File Explorer, select the back  button to go to the location you downloaded the drivers into.
• Find and double click or double tap on the file named f2748416-7753-49c6-9185-56f4986f490b_e98e0d664b7e874011b8e3752046ca61f3475295.cab
• Select CTRL+a on the keyboard. This should select all of the files
• Right click or long press on any of the files and select Extract.
• If you are in the folder named Realtek Bluetooth, then select the New folder button and type Realtek Bluetooth 2.
• Select the Extract button.
• In the search box on the taskbar, enter device manager, then select Device Manager.
• Find Bluetooth and expand it.
• Find the Realtek device and right-click or long press on it.
• Select Update Driver from the context menu.
• Select the Browse my computer for driver software button.
• It should default to your Documents folder, if this is where you saved the drivers then just select the Next button. If you did not save the drivers to your Documents folder, select the Browse button and find the folder you downloaded the drivers to and select OK.
• It should now find the updated drivers and install them. Wait for this to complete and select Close.

Safari Users can Enable DuckDuckGo Privacy Extension

Protection is key!

Enhancing your privacy setting are essential when you surf the web. Extensions are equipped to help you out with that need. Just recently, DuckDuckGo privacy extension was disabled due to incompatibility with Safari web browser, but is available for Chrome and Firefox.

Today, DuckDuckGo announced that it has finally enabled it again for Safari and is ready to use. They wrote:

“Millions of Firefox and Chrome users rely on DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, our desktop browser extension that helps protect you no matter where you go on the web. Today, we’re delighted to announce that the wait is over: DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials is once again available for Safari users!

As you may be aware, major structural changes in Safari 12 meant that we had to remove DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials from the Safari extensions gallery. With Safari 13, new functionality was thankfully added that enabled us to put it back. Consequently, you’ll need Safari 13+ on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or newer to install the updated version.”

You can use DuckDuckGo for your preferred search option by clicking on the magnifying glass icon in a new tab, and choosing DuckDuckGo. This feature will allow you to search and browse discreetly. Please note that this private essentials extension is only available for desktop. If you would like the same for your mobile devices, you can download the browser app for iOS or Android.

Download Folder Removed from Disk Cleanup

To free up hard disk space on computers, users often refer to Windows 10 Disk Cleanup. This will remove any unnecessary files cluttering your hard drive and free up for future needed files.

Tuesday, Brandon LeBlanc from Windows Insiders announced that they will be removing the Download option from Disk Cleanup. He writes in a released statement, “Based on feedback, we’ve decided to remove the downloads folder from disk cleanup.”

The feedback responses included many users challenging the necessity of having the option to remove files from the Downloads folder. Too many of them accidentally selected it and ‘OK’ed the disk cleanup, only to find that there were indeed files in the folder that they needed.

There’s no word as to when this change will occur, but it’s speculated that the next patch will follow through for Disk Cleanup for Windows 10.

Update iPhone or iPad to Avoid GPS Issues

If you have an iPhone or iPad made in 2012 or earlier, you will want to read this. This Sunday, November 3rd, GPS disruptions will occur if you do not have your Apple devices updated to the latest software.

According to Apple Support, “Starting just before 12:00 a.m. UTC on November 3, 2019,* some iPhone and iPad models introduced in 2012 and earlier will require an iOS update to maintain accurate GPS location. This is due to the GPS time rollover issue that began affecting GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019. Affected Apple devices are not impacted until just before 12:00 a.m. UTC on November 3, 2019.”

The software version should be 10.3.4 or 9.3.6. To check if you have one of these numbers, simply open up the Settings app and go to General, then About. The Software Version is the second down, under your name.

If this pertains to you and you need more information on this, check out the Apple Support Website.

PowerToys is One of Microsoft’s Coolest Tools

Yesterday, Brandon LeBlanc from Windows Insider Program announced a new release of PowerToys v0.12.

If you’ve never heard of PowerToys, LeBlanc states that, “it’s a set of utilities for power users to tune and streamline their Windows experience for greater productivity.” Apparently PowerToys was revamped from Windows 95 and is specifically for Windows 10 on GitHub.

Microsoft received lots of feedback from the Windows Insiders for this particular feature and seem to be eager to see how it all pans out for the public.

One certain PowerToy is the PowerRename. This allows you to group a handful of files and rename them in a short amount of time.

LeBlanc finishes the blog post with two more utilities, FancyZones and Dark Mode Support. He states, “The next big improvement is with FancyZones, a window manager that’s designed to make it easy to arrange and snap windows into efficient layouts for your workflow. We made the editor multi-monitor aware, targeted globalization bugs, and corrected other high priority issues. Lastly, we’ve started to add in support for Dark Mode where appropriate.”

I can definitely see businesses applying these utilizations to their workload. You’re able to choose your layout and adjust according to what works best for you. It just makes things easier.

If you’d like to install PowerToys, head over to GitHub and download the PowerToysSetup.msi installer.

Security Patch Sent to Wrong Windows 10 Version

Windows slipped up a little again this week. Microsoft released an update that included an improvement to Windows Autopilot devices. However it was sent to the wrong version.

According to Chris Merriman, an associate editor at the INQUIRER:

For anyone that doesn’t know, Autopilot is a system from the company’s InTune imprint, used to roll out Windows in a business environment. If you’re not in a business environment, and at the IT admin end, you’re usually never going to see it. In fact, according to the notes for the patch:

“Windows Autopilot update is not installed on Windows 10 Pro or a later version when the device is not registered or configured for Windows Autopilot deployment. Windows Autopilot update is never offered to Windows 10 Home.”

Thing is, it was. In fact, it was sent to Home devices and Pro devices that weren’t registered for Autopilot.

The issue has apparently been found and dealt with, but it is urged that you don’t install it unless it’s necessary – which it probably isn’t.

Microsoft Docs says this in regarding adding devices:

“Before deploying a device using Windows Autopilot, the device must be registered with the Windows Autopilot deployment service. Ideally, this would be performed by the OEM, reseller, or distributor from which the devices were purchased, but this can also be done by the organization by collecting the hardware identity and uploading it manually.

If an existing device is already running Windows 10 version 1703 or later and enrolled in an MDM service such an Intune, that MDM service can ask the device for the hardware ID (also known as a hardware hash). Once it has that, it can automatically register the device with Windows Autopilot.

For instructions on how to do this with Microsoft Intune, see Create an Autopilot deployment profile documentation describing the “Convert all targeted devices to Autopilot” setting.

Senators Push Emergency Alerts Through Technology

Yesterday, Brian Schatz and John Thune, Senators from Hawaii and South Dakota opened the Reliable Emergency Alert Distribution Improvement Act back up again. Schatz’ website released statements from both him and Thune regarding the issues Emergency Alerts encounter. These issues include the lack of relevant alerts in parts of the country.

“When a missile alert went out across Hawai‘i last year, some people never got the message on their phones, while others missed it on their TVs and radios. Even though it was a false alarm, the missile alert exposed real flaws in the way people receive emergency alerts,” said Senator Schatz, lead Democrat on the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet. “Our bill fixes a number of important problems with the system responsible for delivering emergency alerts. In a real emergency, these alerts can save lives so we have to do everything we can to get it right.”

“South Dakotans understand how drastically the weather can change on a dime,” said Senator Thune, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, Innovation, and the Internet. “For that reason, among many others, this legislation would make necessary improvements to help keep South Dakotans and communities around the country safe in times of emergency. I want to thank Sen. Schatz for his leadership on this issue and look forward to working with him to move this bill forward.”

The READI Act will have a number of resolutions when it comes to Emergency Alerts. This includes:
  • Alerts sent to streaming services, such as Netflix, Apple TV+, Apple Music, and more
  • Not allowing opting out of receiving certain alerts
  • A reporting system so the FCC can fix any issues
  • Urging SECC (State Emergency Communications Committees) to update their alert system plans
  • Having alerts be played multiple times, instead of the only one time requirement
  • FEMA working on enhancing training on the alert system

So all in all, you may be seeing improvements on any emergency alerts, not only on your phone, but radio, tv, streaming services, and more in the near future. The READI Act already has the full support of a wide variety of television and internet associations.
