Special Apple Event

Codenamed “Unleashed”, Apple announced an upcoming event to share more information about the “M1X” processor.

According to 9to5Mac, “The new MacBook Pros are expected to feature a mini-LED display, an HDMI port, an SD card slot, MagSafe for charging, and much more.  Apple is also expected to ditch the controversial Touch Bar in favor of a traditional row of function keys. The design of the new MacBook Pros is expected to be similar to the latest iMac, iPhone, and iPad design language with flatter edges.”

It’s also rumored that Apple will publicize macOS Monterey’s release date.

The event will, once again, be virtual due to the pandemic. Everyone can tune in on October 18th at 10 am PST.

Whoops! Microsoft Accidentally Leaked Again…

A Microsoft worker unintentionally released the new Notepad app on Twitter. Unfortunately, all screenshots were quickly deleted once users noticed them.

According to Windows Latest, “Notepad, which has become a separate Store-updateable and optional app on Windows 11, is getting updated with a new command bar and Fluent Design improvements.”

The new Notepad app will have an appearance with rounded corners. Menus, pop-ups, and other sections of the app will have rounded corners.

A Microsoft employee had accidentally leaked the new Media Player late last month. This app will replace the Movies & TV app and will be available in a future Windows 11 update.

Ultimate Guide to Safeguard Your Computer

No computer is 100% secure from any and all viruses. However, you can take appropriate steps to protect it as much as possible. Developers from software giants, such as Microsoft and Apple, create applications to further safeguard devices.

Windows Security

We as Microsoft users understand the basic necessity of keeping our PC safe. Windows 10 includes a built-in app, called Windows Security to scan for viruses, along with firewall and network protection.

Passwords

Microsoft encourages users to go passwordless. Microsoft states, “this will strengthen your device sign-in by switching all Microsoft accounts on your device to modern multifactor authentication with Windows Hello Face, Fingerprint, or PIN, and eliminating passwords from Windows.”

Be sure to have the Microsoft Authenticator app installed and linked to your Microsoft account. Also, change your passwords about every three months.

Weak passwords are the entry point for the majority of attacks across enterprise and consumer accounts. There are a whopping 579 password attacks every second—that’s 18 billion every year.

Safe Browsing

Hackers have the capability of implementing malware from web browsers, not just operating systems.

Browsers, such as Google have been creating a safer environment on their platform. This includes their Chrome browser, Gmail, and the collab with Android.

An application system called “Safe Browsing” was developed by the team to ensure the protection of its users. When unknown sites or apps pop up, the system shows a warning message of the potential threat.

How To Turn on Dynamic Lock

Windows 10 includes such a nifty little feature to help those who are somewhat forgetful when it comes to locking their home screen.

The feature, called Dynamic Lock, automatically locks your device or PC when your bluetooth (which needs to be connected with your computer) is out of range. Here’s how to enable this helpful feature:

  • Start Menu
  • Settings
  • Accounts
  • Sign-in Options
  • Dynamic Lock
  • Check box “Allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you’re away”

No Bluetooth? No problem!

If you’d rather not deal with bluetooth, you can still lock your screen automatically and have it put to a screen saver:

  • Start Menu
  • Type Change screen saver
  • Scroll to Blank
  • Choose allotted time for Screen Saver
  • Check box “On resume, display logon screen”
  • Click Apply, then OK

Apple iMessage Breach Last Month

Internet trolls can breach any type of system if it is not properly secured. Emails and software are just two ways they can infiltrate your pc without your awareness.

The motivations for these attacks range from stealing data to financial gain. They also crash business computers in order to shut them down. One breach, in particular, occurred last month against the software giant, Apple.

Apple’s iMessage Security Breach

Apple has put out a new security update to fix a flaw that caused a software breach for months, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported Monday (Sept. 13).

NSO Group, an Israeli cybersecurity firm, has been exploiting a vulnerability to silently infect iPhones using iMessage since February, WSJ reported, citing research group Citizen Lab, which looks into cyberattacks on “journalists and dissidents.”

The intrusion was ominous to Citizen Lab because it was a “zero click” attack, referring to an attack in which the user doesn’t need to click a link or open a document to be attacked, according to the report.

John Scott-Railton, one of the Citizen Lab researchers, told WSJ that “anyone with iMessage” could be infected unknowingly. He added that the software was “rare and probably expensive,” and that it likely was developed with a substantial amount of work.

Top Reason to Update Your Apps

Updates to apps and operating systems can be inconvenient at times. Patches, optional updates, and significant updates are all available. But to keep up with modern technology and user feedback, updates are necessary.

Updating your apps should be a top priority. The biggest reason is this:

Updating your operating system, browser, and other software on your PC or mobile device reduces the risk of cybersecurity threats. Leaving them unpatched might result in serious issues, such as hackers gaining access to confidential information or spreading viruses.

While some malware is harmless, others can do significant damage. That is something that no one wants to handle. To avoid difficulties, keep all of your programs and operating systems up to date.

Get the most recent versions of the apps by updating them. If you have a lot of apps on your device that you don’t use anymore, it’s a good idea to delete them.

Check PC for Windows 11 Compatibility

Many PCs are allowed to download and install the brand new Windows 11 operating system. However, some are not.

If your computer lacks the necessary hardware, it will be supported either partially or not at all. Microsoft’s stance on Windows 11 requirements remains unchanged. They stated the new operating system will only be available for compatible devices. How can you tell if your computer can upgrade? Here’s how:

Go to the Microsoft Website

If you head over to the Microsoft website and scroll down close to the bottom of the page, you’ll find “Check for compatibility”. From there, they give you the option of downloading what’s called the PC health check app.

By clicking on “Check now”, this application will scan your computer to see if it meets the qualifications. If it does, the update will show up in Updates under the Settings app.

  1. Click the Start menu
  2. Type in Windows Update
  3. Click on Check for updates

Some users may see the result (shown above). You will still be allowed Windows 10 updates. And remember, the Windows 10 OS end-of-service doesn’t end until 2025.

Creating a Child Account on Windows OS

With the recent global pandemic, more and more people are relying on the internet for work and other resources. Kids are also dependent on computers to help with schooling. And with all the amount of resources available to them, parents can easily become concerned. Restrictions need to be in place.

Windows OS allows you to add child accounts with parental controls set in place to block unwanted websites.

First, to create a child account, follow the steps below:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Accounts
  3. Family & other users
  4. Click the Add a family member, under Your Family
  5. Click Add a child, enter their e-mail address (if applicable), and click Next
  6. Click Confirm

An e-mail will be sent to the address provided, requesting them to join to complete the addition process.

Second, to block websites, follow the steps below:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Accounts
  3. Family and other users
  4. Click Manage family settings online, located under Add a family member
  5. Click on More options
  6. On the drop-down menu, click on Content restrictions
  7. Click on Block inappropriate websites to turn it on

Turning on the Block inappropriate websites will block all adult websites. This will turn your SafeSearch on, which is quite the handy feature on Windows 10. You can also add websites that you want to allow, and add websites that you want to block. This is optional, however.

When kids attempt to access any websites that are on the blocked list, an Ask for permission box will pop up. This will state that they will need to request permission from an adult family member to access the website. This gives parents complete control on whether or not they want to approve it.

Windows 11 is Available Today

Today, October 5th, Microsoft released the brand new Windows 11 operating system. Users have been waiting for months for it to become available, and now it’s here! Here are a few things to remember:

Windows 11 is only available for supported devices.

If your computer lacks the necessary hardware, it will be supported either partially or not at all. Microsoft’s stance on Windows 11 requirements remains unchanged. They said unequivocally that the new operating system will only be available for compatible devices. Unfortunately, an unsupported operating system may raise the chance of BSOD (black screen of death) or other technical problems.

There may be bugs, still.

Not everyone will have a trouble-free update. Even though developers have tested it the past few months, users have already begun reporting Windows 11 difficulties and other concerns. This includes a glitch in which some users may be unable to install the upgrade owing to generic errors.

The new OS may not be available to everyone.

Around the same time, Windows 11 will be made available as a free upgrade to Windows 10 customers, albeit not everyone will be provided the software all at once. Also, your PC must fulfill specific minimum Windows 11 requirements, such as a 64GB hard drive and a 9′′ monitor.

Child Safety Features Coming to iOS

Apple is currently working on a feature for iPhone, iPad, and Macs’ Message App. This particular one will solely focus on child safety. When receiving or sending inappropriate graphic photographs, it will alert youngsters and their parents.

When a child attempts to view a photo flagged as sensitive in the Messages app, they will be alerted that the photo may contain private body parts, and that the photo may be hurtful. Depending on the age of the child, there will also be an option for parents to receive a notification if their child proceeds to view the sensitive photo or if they choose to send a sexually explicit photo to another contact after being warned.

Controversial Feature

While many users are happy about this extra step of protection, others are not. According to an Apple Privacy Letter, “On August 5th, 2021, Apple Inc. announced new technological measures meant to apply across virtually all of its devices under the umbrella of “Expanded Protections for Children”. While child exploitation is a serious problem, and while efforts to combat it are almost unquestionably well-intentioned, Apple’s proposal introduces a backdoor that threatens to undermine fundamental privacy protections for all users of Apple products.

It’s uncertain how much privacy is lost due to this upcoming child safety feature. The pros and cons seem to possibly go back and forth.

Helpful tip: When users ask Siri how they may report CSAM (Child Sexual Abuse Material) or child exploitation, they will be directed to materials explaining where and how to submit a report.
