Update to Microsoft Paint

Windows 11 will be arriving within a few short months, and including a plethora of features. Revamping the whole operating system, the update will enhance the Microsoft’s long standing Paint app.

The old, but still kicking, app has been around since November of 1985. Microsoft announced back in 2017 that Paint may have been getting the boot. However, that wasn’t the case. It continued receiving updates throughout the last few years.

Paint app has been updated with new icons, rounded corners, support for Windows 11’s new dark theme and redesigned context menu. You’ll be able to change MS Paint’s theme directly from Windows 11’s Settings app. Of course, Paint will automatically respect the system-wide theme.

Why Should You Back Up Your Computer

Your computer is an extension of you. It contains personal information, full of files and folders that are priceless. And it’s quite important to keep it safe and secure.

Unfortunately, files become lost or corrupted due to malware or hardware crashes. It’s times like these that you have to be extra careful.

Backing up your computer is the solution to these issues. Microsoft Support shares on their blog how to back up and restore your computer. They also state the importance of backing up on a separate hard drive.

“Do not back up files to the same hard disk that Windows is installed on. For example, do not back up files to a recovery partition. Always store media used for backups (external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs) in a secure place to prevent unauthorized people from having access to your files; a fireproof location separate from your computer is recommended. You might also consider encrypting the data on your backup.”

Update Your PC Now, Microsoft Warns

Windows 10 users should make sure their devices are fully updated with the very latest patches from Microsoft. This is extremely important to keep PC’s secure to avoid vulnerabilities.

Just recently, Microsoft verified hackers infiltrated their software. This lead to multiple vulnerabilities with a few critical ones. The software giant is urging their users to update their PC immediately.

Perhaps the most dangerous of all is a threat that is being actively exploited by cyber criminals. Microsoft has confirmed that attackers have managed to find a weakness in something called the “Windows Update Medic.”

This is a relatively new addition to Windows 10 that has been created to run in the background and repair Windows Update components from damage. That means a computer can continue to receive vital updates at all times.

What Are Optional Windows Updates?

And are the optional updates necessary?

To keep the Windows 10 operating system working properly, Microsoft releases automatic updates. These updates include bug fixes, security enhancements, and upgraded features.

Optional updates are found in the System Settings, under Windows Updates. These aren’t automatically implemented into the operating system. This is due to the lack of necessity of keeping the OS running smoothly.

“If you have a specific problem, one of these drivers might help. Otherwise, automatic updates will keep your drivers up to date.”

While these kinds of updates are voluntary, they do have a purpose. How-To Geek states, ” These fix stability issues and other problems in Windows. Some of these may be optional hardware driver updates. You have the choice of whether or not to install these—it’s up to you.”

Patch Tuesday completes a once-a-month update, arriving on the second Tuesday. These patches pertain to a large amount of bug fixes all rolled into one “cumulative” update.

So do you have to download and install these optional updates? No. However, if you are experiencing computer issues, it wouldn’t hurt to check out the list of options available.

MacBook Temperature Tips

Basic measures should be taken to safeguard your equipment’s hardware. MacBook users may notice an increase of warmth coming from their device as a result of daily use. Thankfully, MacBooks include sensors to detect overheating in certain components. It then turns on fans to automatically cool them down.

The importance of these factors rely on avoiding malfunctions and crashes. If the computer overheats, damage to it could destroy any saved important files and/or documents. No one wants that to happen.

Apple says to use Activity Monitor to check CPU activity when your device is warmer than normal. Be sure your software is updated to the latest version.

Also, keep the computer away from heat. If you must take your devices outside, keep them away from direct sunlight. Allow your equipment to gradually cool down to avoid overheating from extended time in the sun. Don’t attempt to cool it down rapidly.

Use your Mac notebook where the ambient temperature is between 50° and 95° F (10° and 35° C). Don’t leave your Mac notebook in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range. You should also use your Mac notebook where the relative humidity is between 0% and 95% (noncondensing).

Fraud Warning: Buying Licenses for Cheap

When buying licenses for your PC, make sure your purchase is legitimate. Too often, online stores claim to save you money by buying Windows and Office licenses through them. But the truth of the matter is, they’re fraudulent. You pay and get a non-working license code.

Sometimes, you will find non-existent licenses, according to Microsoft.

We often see products for sale with descriptions that mislead the buyer. Some examples are: Office 365 lifetime, Office 365 2019. None of these descriptions correspond to a real product. For clarification:

  • Windows: One-time purchase. The only licenses for sale now are Windows 10 licenses all previous versions of Windows are not available, nor there are higher versions of Windows. If you are offered the chance to purchase a Windows 7, 8, 8.1 license, you are being cheated.
  • Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365): Annual subscription, it can be paid monthly or annually. There is no version of 365 that is lifelong, (paid only once). Anyone who chooses this model will be entitled to updates for as long as they keep the Office subscription active.
  • Office 2019: One-time purchase. You will not receive updates with new features or new versions. There are no licenses for previous versions of Office for sale (2016, 2013, etc.), if you are offered an earlier version, you are being cheated.

It’s better to be safe than sorry. Buy licenses on the Microsoft website, if possible. And report any companies selling false licenses to ensure they don’t affect any other buyers.

Uninstalling Updates

Microsoft has provided a number of troublesome updates to its users since the COVID-19 pandemic started. For example one update of May 2020 (Windows 10 KB4556799) caused a slew of issues, including the Blue Screen of Death and the reversion of settings to normal.

It’s difficult to say how many users were affected by this issue last year. If you have dealt with similar problems, the only thing you can do is uninstall the program. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Go to Start Menu
  2. Settings
  3. Update & Security
  4. Under Check for updates, click on View update history
  5. Click on Uninstall updates

This will open a window with all of the changes listed in chronological order, with the most recent at the top. Then, right-click on the update that needs to be uninstalled and select uninstall.

If you need to uninstall specific KB (Knowledge Base) number updates, using the Search Installed Updates box in the top right corner of the control panel window is a simple and easy way to do so.

Freeing Up Storage on a Mac

When it comes to a Mac’s performance, the amount of free storage available is crucial.

To find out how much storage your Mac has currently, go to the start menu, which is the Apple icon, then to About This Mac, and to Storage.

Once on the Storage Tab, you can click on the Manage… button to see the list of recommendations Mac has for the best optimization. You will also find the following tools available:

  • Store in iCloud
  • Optimize Storage
  • Empty Trash Automatically
  • Reduce Clutter

When utilizing the iCloud storage drive, it’s recommended the device is updated to the latest OS version. Reducing Clutter works great under the recommended files your device shares. From there, you may delete any large files, photos, videos, or other documents you feel are unnecessary to have. Optimizing Storage will delete any past tv or movie purchases automatically. If you choose the Empty Trash Automatically, anything in the Trash Bin past 30 days will be deleted.
