Update on SolarWinds Breach

Back in December, we shared a statement on the SolarWinds Breach on our blog. Thankfully, the SolarWinds software that we provide to our clients was not a part of the corporate scale Orion system and our systems and the software we use was not subject to any data loss or breach.

SolarWinds recently reported a $3.5 million (pre-tax) loss, after paying for legal and other services to remedy the breach. And unfortunately, the company is still dealing with legality issues.

They’re hoping that security knowledge will heighten to avoid this destructive incident from happening again. MarketScreener shared statements and information by SolarWinds:

“Through our investigations into the Cyber Incident, we hope to understand it better, apply our findings to further adapt and enhance our security measures across our systems and our software development and build environments and share our findings and adaptations with our customers, government officials and the technology industry more broadly to help them better understand and protect against these types of attacks in the future. We refer to these adaptations and enhancements as “Secure by Design.”

macOS Update to Fix USB-C Hub Issues

Apple issued an update on macOS to fix a USB-C problem with MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

According to Apple Support, it states, “macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 prevents MacBook Pro (2019 or later) and MacBook Air (2020 or later) models from incurring damage when they are connected to certain third-party, non-compliant powered USB-C hubs and docks.”

Newer MacBooks are seemingly becoming unresponsive when third-party USB-C hubs are connected to the laptop. This particular Big Sur OS update will improve this case.

It’s encouraged to download and install this update to be safe. You can find the the Software Update under System Preferences.

New Floating Start Menu on Windows 10

Microsoft developers are currently working hard on some new designs for Windows 10, specifically its user interface.

Named “Sun Valley”, this project began back last year, in hopes for it to be released later in 2021. One specific feature they are currently revamping is the Start Menu. To modernize, the Start Menu will float unattached, just above the taskbar. Windows Central shared a recreation of the floating Start Menu design.

“Regarding the Start menu, I know that Microsoft is working to round off “sharp” elements of its UI, such as the corners around live tiles and the Start menu itself. Context menus and Jump Lists in the Start menu and Taskbar are also expected to get the rounded corner treatment, along with most modern in-box apps.”

In addition to the Start Menu, Microsoft planned to update the operating system, adding new features, and fixing up animations. Sun Valley is expected to be released in October 2021.

Some MacBook Pros Aren’t Charging

If you have a 2016 or 2017 MacBook Pro, this issue may pertain to you.

Apparently, some MacBooks aren’t charging past 1%, which is quite the dilemma. macOS Big Sur released an update just recently, encouraging all users to install it as a precaution. This one battery-related issue affects a small percentage of users acquiring a 2016 or 2017 MacBook Pro.

Apple Support stated, “A very small number of customers with 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro computers have experienced an issue with the battery not charging past 1%.

The battery health status on these devices will also indicate “Service Recommended.” If the status indicates that your battery is Normal, your battery is not affected by this issue.

Thankfully, if you fall under those experiencing battery issues, Apple says you can contact them. They will verify if your computer is eligible to receive a new battery replacement for free.

The MacBook Pros are listed below:

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports)

Edge Legacy End Support Next Month

Last year in September, we shared a blog post about Windows 10 forcing the Edge browser installation. There are ways to remove it. However, other than it possibly becoming a nuisance, the browser doesn’t cause any problems to the operating system.

Microsoft announced its end of support back in August of 2020 for Edge Legacy. While it is currently the default browser on Windows 10, downloading the new Edge browser is encouraged to keep ongoing support. The End of Life for Edge Legacy will be on March 9th, 2021. This means security updates will no longer be available.

Source: Microsoft Support

On top of that, Microsoft 365 is ending support for Internet Explorer 11 in August. The Microsoft Tech Community states on its blog, “after the above dates, customers will have a degraded experience or will be unable to connect to Microsoft 365 apps and services on IE 11. For degraded experiences, new Microsoft 365 features will not be available or certain features may cease to work when accessing the app or service via IE 11. While we know this change will be difficult for some customers, we believe that customers will get the most out of Microsoft 365 when using the new Microsoft Edge. We are committed to helping make this transition as smooth as possible.”

Keep an eye out for more end of support updates here on the Karls Technology blog.

A Familiar Trojan is Back

If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

Malware finds its way into just about everything. From online game downloads to e-mail attachments, users are encouraged to be mindful of where the source is coming from. You shouldn’t download unknown software, as the risk of viruses rises.

Just recently, TechRadar shared a returning trojan that was involved in cyberattacks between 2018 and 2020. They stated that ‘DanaBot’ produced no activity for several months. However, lately, there have been noticeable schemes from the malware.

“The DanaBot malware works by hiding two stealer components within the software key of pirated tools. The first software key is used to collect browser details, system information, and cryptocurrency wallets from the victim, while the second is used to install a cryptocurrency miner.”

DanaBot distributes its malware software online, impersonating legit games or free downloads. When pursued, the malware gives hackers the opportunity to steal personal information, such as banking credentials.

Attack on SolarWinds Turns to Malwarebytes

It seems as though we have not seen the last of the attacker, who on December 14th, 2020, breeched the Orion platform in SolarWinds software.

According to Malwarebytes:

“We can confirm the existence of another intrusion vector that works by abusing applications with privileged access to Microsoft Office 365 and Azure environments. After an extensive investigation, we determined the attacker only gained access to a limited subset of internal company emails. We found no evidence of unauthorized access or compromise in any of our internal on-premises and production environments.”

Malwarebytes is a trusted name in cybersecurity. Although they do not utilize SolarWinds software in their company, they and other companies like Microsoft have been affected by it. They thank security companies, such as CrowdStrike and FireEye for their efforts in vividly recounting attacks publicly in hopes to avoid further issues.

Crowdstrike shared that malware coming from activity, called StellerParticle included SUNSPOT. SUNSPOT had been added to certain software builds (such as SolarWinds) as a backdoor. It then acted discreetly while replacing different source files with malware.

“The design of SUNSPOT suggests StellarParticle developers invested a lot of effort to ensure the code was properly inserted and remained undetected, and prioritized operational security to avoid revealing their presence in the build environment to SolarWinds developers.”

Microsoft Adding Features to Taskbar

Features will include weather, stock, and newsfeed

Windows Insiders are testing out the new widgets that will be added to the Windows 10 taskbar in a future update. It’s been a while since any new features had been added to the taskbar, so it will be interesting to see how users respond to it.

Tom Warren from The Verge writes on their blog, “The taskbar feature will pop out into a mini feed of content that can be personalized with the latest sports news, headlines, and weather information. Microsoft is using its Microsoft News network to surface news and content from more than 4,500 sources. The company has been curating this through artificial intelligence in recent months, and this particular feature will also learn what news is relevant to you when you dismiss or like stories in the feed.”

It’s also shared that Microsoft Edge browser would be installed. So, if you click on a link on the newsfeed, it will open up the Edge browser for you to read it. You will have the ability to disable the feature, if you would rather.

New UI For Alarms & Clock App

A new UI (user interface) for the Alarms & Clock app is currently in the works for Windows 10.

According to Windows Central, this UI has been unannounced as part of the “Sun Valley UI refresh”. Zac Bowden, a senior editor, stated on the blog, “The new app update is in testing now with Insiders in the Dev Channel, and will likely roll out to production machines sometime in 2021. I understand that this Alarms & Clock app update is part of the Sun Valley initiative, which aims to reinvigorate the Windows user experience with a refreshed design and new features in time for the fall 2021 release.”

It appears the devs are recreating simplistic apps, such as this one, to make them look more modernized with the other Windows 10 apps. There’s a definite difference in the current UI and the one in development.

The Alarm & Clock app is currently being tested by Windows Insiders.

If you are part of the Windows Insiders Program, you can update your computer before anyone else does – great for future reference. Statement on SolarWinds Breach

On Monday, Dec 14, SolarWinds reported that its Orion platform had been breached by an insertion of malicious code. This code was then distributed through the system to approximately 18,000 potential users. The code targeted large scale corporate and governmental network infrastructure(s). This exploit impacted emails through the Treasury and Commerce departments, as well as the Department of Homeland Security prompting an immediate disconnect from all services based on the Orion platform by US government agencies.

Fortunately, the SolarWinds software that we provide to our clients is not a part of the corporate scale Orion system and our systems and the software we use was not subject to any data loss or breach. This attack targeted large scale, multi-server networks at the corporate and government level and is in no way connected to the SolarWinds services we provide to our clients. Despite not being the targets of this hack, our SolarWinds team is working proactively to monitor the situation and maintain the integrity of our own services to ensure that our client’s information is safe and remains private.

At this time, the server the attack originated from has been identified and federal cybersecurity experts are working to identify the individuals responsible as quickly as possible. We value the trust and faith our clients place in us and hope that this announcement will calm any uncertainty resulting from this situation. Any of our clients that would like to ask questions about this incident are more than welcome to call into our head office at 1-800-620-5285 and speak with the Helpdesk for clarification on the circumstances of this breach. We understand that our clients trust us with their information and we are working tirelessly to monitor the situation and provide proactive support and response — should other platforms under the SolarWinds banner become compromised. Any further updates will be provided as quickly as possible.

Thank you,
The Karls Technology Team
