Install Bulk Apps with Winstall

If you just recently purchased a PC with the new Windows 10 OS, you’ll want to know about this nifty feature.

The Windows Package Manager from Microsoft is a handy software tool to make your life easier. It includes its new Winstall, a GUI (graphic user interface) tool. This allows users to download apps in bulk, and gives them a fast and secure way of acquiring what is needed with their featured selection. Included in their list are gaming, home, entertainment, and more!

To install, Winstall explains it on their website:

To use winstall, you can search for apps on the homepage. Additionally, you can also view all the apps available via Windows Package Manager on this page.

Simply select the apps you want to download and click on the “Generate Script” button at the bottom of the screen. You will then be presented with a command that you can copy and paste into any Windows command-line. Input that into a command line app of your choice, and hit enter to start installing the apps one-by-one using Windows Package Manager. You can also generate a PowerShell script by toggling the “Show Powershell script” option.

Alternatively, you can click on the “Download .bat/.ps1” button which will download a batch file. However, you will likely get a security warning from your browser. In that case, ignore the warning as the batch file is completely secure. Once downloaded, you can double-click the .bat/ file to install the apps using the Windows Package Manager.

Windows Package Manager can be downloaded, if you don’t have it yet. It’s open-sourced and part of the GitHub repository.

Disable Bing Search with Windows Update

There’s a new Windows 10 update available, which allows users the ability to disable Bing Search.

Bing is owned by Microsoft, and was the rebrand of Live Search in 2009. It’s one of the highest search engines worldwide. By disabling it, however, therein lies a perk.

According to Tech Radar, “While the feature provides quick access to a search engine, disabling Bing (and thereby eliminating web pages from the search results) can improve the speed and quality of local searches dramatically – so it’s an important option to have.”

To disable Bing, users will have to the Registry Editor. And while it may improve speed, there’s a possibility that it could add high CPU usage. This, in turn, could destroy the CPU. It’s important to remember that utilizing the Registery Editor is quite risky. Creating a registry backup is highly encouraged to ensure the best way to undo any issues.

Warning to Those Using Windows 7

If you are a Windows 7 user still, you need to hear this.

Apparently, there’s an e-mail scam going around, stating a free Windows 10 upgrade. These e-mails too often look legit, as they utilize the same logos and signatures. They include a handful of links for the user to click, claiming when you put in your e-mail and password, you’ll be given a free upgrade.

According to Tom’s Guide, “Cofense says that once you input your credentials, the scam site bounces you to a real Microsoft page informing you that, yes indeed, “Support for Windows 7 has ended.” (It ended in January 2020.)”

These e-mail scams are created by hackers to sneak into your credentials to steal any and all personal information.

While there are ways of getting a free Windows 10 upgrade, Microsoft will not e-mail you links randomly. Always check the Sender e-mail by clicking on the name. Also, don’t click on links sent by people you do not know.

When in doubt, throw it out.

Safari 14 Update Comes With Benefits

Safari is the lead, default browser on all Apple devices. This most recent update included many benefits and improvements to the browser.

The first one is the Privacy Report. This handy feature gives you a breakdown of any and all trackers attempting to profile. Safari, in this instance, blocks their intentions and sends you the report.

Secondly, they have enhanced the browser extension. There are a handful of new extensions available through Safari.

The new Start Page shows your Favorites, along with your recently viewed sites, Privacy Report and your Siri Suggestions. It also can be customized with a background image of your choice. Just click on the settings icon on the lower right corner of the Start Page and checkmark any of the options you’d like to see. Preloaded backgrounds are available as well. However, click the + button to choose your own.

Don’t forget to install the new update on your Mac. You can check to see if the update is available by clicking on System Preferences, and then Software Update.

iOS 14 Has a Bug

Apple announced their iOS 14 update back in June, and it was released on September 16th. However, it comes with an unexpected bug, according to users.

The bug apparently resets to default Apple apps when the device is restarted. CNET stated on their blog that Apple was fully aware of the bug, and plan on taking care of the issue in the next update.

So if you prefer using other apps, like your browser or mail, simply go into your settings, scroll down until you see the browser or mail app, and change which one you’d rather acquire as your default.

Malicious Emails Could Cause Admin Issues

Microsoft Office’s years old defect has allowed hackers to create e-mails which could potentially wreak havoc. If you use Microsoft Office, keep reading!

According to NIST, “Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 3, Microsoft Office 2010 Service Pack 2, Microsoft Office 2013 Service Pack 1, and Microsoft Office 2016 allow an attacker to run arbitrary code in the context of the current user by failing to properly handle objects in memory, aka “Microsoft Office Memory Corruption Vulnerability”. This CVE ID is unique from CVE-2017-11884.”

If a certain account has the high admin control, and the hacker receive the privileges, it could be troublesome. That could potentially allow them to delete information, install just about anything, and give them access to any and all private information.

Make sure your antivirus is up to date on your computer to avoid any and all malicious cyber attacks. Also, remember that Windows 10 updates are only pushed through its operating system and not through e-mails.

Windows 10 Forces Edge Browser

Microsoft is always finding ways to keep Windows 10 up to date on the latest features and security. If you use the updated operating system, you may find their own browser, Edge, installed on your computer.

That’s because Microsoft is working hard to encourage their users to use Edge, instead of other browsers. Google Chrome has them beat, being the most used web browser.

Yes, Microsoft Edge has a handful of benefits when you use it, like importing your bookmarks from other browsers. If you’d rather not have Edge on your computer, you can uninstall it. However, Microsoft doesn’t make it easy. According to LifeHacker, “you can uninstall it from Windows 10 with some simple PowerShell wizardry.” They show you two ways to uninstall Edge.

Windows 10 will not break or mess up if you uninstall Edge, so no worries about that. It’s mostly just a hassle, so if it doesn’t bother you to have the browser on your computer, just leave it be.

Blue Screen of Death Caused by Intel WIFI Drivers

If you have been experiencing the infamous Blue Screen of Death due to mobile hotspot connection, it may possibly be because of Intel.

Intel’s wireless drivers have caused a number of issues when attempting to watch an online video or when the Windows 10 hotspot is turned on. But thankfully, there is a fix for this issue.

According to MSPoweruser, a Microsoft tech blog, Intel has released an update to remove the bug. You can also find a list of adapters on their post.

“The best way to install the driver is to download Intel® Driver & Support Assistant which will make sure you have the right driver for your hardware, but if you are more hands-on you can download the package directly here.”

Apple’s Event Doesn’t Involve iPhone

Apple made a special announcement, sharing it’s September Event coming up.

September 15th, Apple will live stream their event on their website at 10 am PDT. Their main focuses are the Apple Watch and iPad. Back in July, Apple stated that they were not sharing the new iPhone until October.

On their blog, MacRumors suggests, “If there’s no ‌iPhone‌, we could also see other rumored products like the first Arm-based Mac (which is rumored to be a 13-inch MacBook Pro), over-ear “AirPods Studio” headphones, AirTags, and a smaller HomePod, all of which have been rumored for a fall launch.”

Mark your calendars!

AirTags from Apple Available Soon

It’s rumored that the new Apple AirTags will be available sometime in October. These AirTags are similar to the Tile tags, in which they have built-in bluetooth to track devices or other important items if lost.

MacRumors shares that the Airtags will also come with the ever paramount ultra-wideband support.

“The rumored ultra-wideband support is worth noting because it’s going to let iPhones with a U1 chip (the iPhone 11, 11 Pro, and 11 Pro Max) track positioning with more accuracy than Bluetooth alone. If you lose your keys down the couch cushion, for example, the ‌iPhone‌ should be able to lead you right to them.”

It isn’t said how they will be able to attach to the items. Tile tags mostly use rings to attach to key rings. AirTags could easily use adhesives, as well as rings.

There’s so much more to the AirTags, but Apple has seemed to keep quiet about most of it. Any information found about them has seemed to leak to different sources, but without Apple’s official statements, it’s all speculation.
