How to get Windows 10 after 7 Support Ends

Coming January 14th, 2020, Windows 7’s support officially ends – which means that if you’re still desiring those security updates or over various updates that allow your PC to work its best, you’ll want to upgrade to Windows 10.

There are a few options that you may have to get Windows 10, including:

You can still forget the 2020 deadline and continue using Windows 7. It’ll continue to be functional. However, any issues regarding 7 will be yours to deal with. Using the free upgrade can possibly cause more complications, including Microsoft determining your product key update eligibility.

Just a heads up, if you don’t activate Windows 10, you’ll most likely see watermarks on your desktop, requesting activation.

Windows 10 Mobile Drops Support

Starting tomorrow, December 10th, 2019, Windows 10 mobiles will see an end to their support.

Microsoft Support states, “Windows 10 Mobile, version 1709 (released October 2017) is the last release of Windows 10 Mobile and Microsoft will end support on December 10, 2019. The end of support date applies to all Windows 10 Mobile products, including Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise.

Windows 10 Mobile users will no longer be eligible to receive new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options or online technical content updates from Microsoft for free.”

They also share that although any programs from either third party or paid still have the ability to implement their own support, Microsoft Support will no longer be available. After Tuesday, they explain, “automatic or manual creation of new device backups for settings and some applications will continue for 3 months, ending March 10, 2020.  Some services including photo uploads and restoring a device from an existing device backup may continue to work for up to another 12 months from end of support.”

To see if you have a Windows Phone OS, follow the steps below:
  1. Settings
  2. System
  3. About
  4. Tap on More info

The information will show the Software and OS Build, which will show that it is a Windows 10 mobile device and operating system build 10.0.15254.

Support Ended for Windows Notepad App

Back in August, we wrote about Windows Notepad getting small upgrades to its application. However, Windows just released a statement in their Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19035 about ending support for it in the Microsoft Store.

Brandon LeBlanc, the Windows Insiders Program Senior Program Manager stated in the blog post:

Thank you for all the feedback you provided on the Store version of Notepad. At this time, we’ve decided not to roll this out to customers. Insiders may notice some changes as we remove this change from this build:

-If you pinned Notepad to your Taskbar or Start menu, you will need to re-pin after you upgrade to this new build.

-If you had certain file types set to open in Notepad by default, you will see a prompt when you try to open files of that type again and will need to re-select Notepad.

There doesn’t seem to be a reason as to why this change is occurring, but if you’re a Windows Insider, you’ll have to make the necessary changes stated above. If you’d like to sign up to be in the Windows Insiders Program, you can register here, accept the terms and you’ll receive a Welcome E-mail. Be certain to read the Important Notice before agreeing to join, as it adds a variety of risks to your computer.

Windows 10 ‘Snipping Tool’ App Getting the Boot

While any and all Windows 10 updates include a variety of fixes, improvements and features, there also calls on a list of app removals. One of the reasons for the removals are the lack of usage from users.

A few of the features that Microsoft is no longer developing are ‘My People’, Windows To Go, and Hologram app (which they’ve replaced with Mixed Reality Viewer). Another major feature that is an important one is the Snipping Tool. However, Microsoft is giving it the boot.

The Snipping Tool app was used to screenshot any part of the screen and customize it to whatever you were needing. But why get rid of an app that is quite essential? Microsoft answers:

In Windows 10, version 1809, we’re introducing a new universal app, Snip & Sketch, that provides the same screen snipping abilities, as well as additional features. You can launch Snip & Sketch directly and start a snip from there, or just press WIN + Shift + S. Snip & Sketch can also be launched from the “Screen snip” button in the Action Center. We’re no longer developing the Snipping Tool as a separate app but are instead consolidating its functionality into Snip & Sketch.

Snipping Tool VS Snip & Sketch

So long story short, there’s no reason to have both the Snipping Tool AND the Snip & Sketch features. Combining both to have the ultimate screenshot app seems the better choice.

Preferred OneNote 2016 App Gets Extended Support

If you’re like the majority of Windows 10 users that prefer the OneNote 2016 version, you’ll be happy to know that support will be extended.

OneNote 2016 is Microsoft’s digital notebook application, where you can write and store any information (such as notes) you may need in one place. The 2016 version is a few years old, but users don’t want it to go away. So Microsoft announced that mainstream support will go until October 10th of 2023 and extended support will end October 14th of 2025.

According to Microsoft Office Support, “Microsoft is continuing mainstream support for OneNote 2016 beyond October 2020. This means you can continue using it and expect to see new feature updates. OneNote 2016 support dates will align with Office 2019 support dates (October 10, 2023 for mainstream support and October 14, 2025 for extended support). Starting in March 2020, when you install Office 365 or Office 2019, the OneNote desktop app will be installed alongside the Word, PowerPoint, and Excel desktop apps.

If you have Windows 10, you can use one or both of OneNote 2016 and OneNote for Windows 10.

Installing Windows 10 on MacBook is Now Available

Although it sounds a bit abnormal – installing Windows 10 to a MacBook – it is now a thing.

Apple recently fixed a problem with the boot utility Boot Camp Assistance that allows other operating systems to be used on their computers. The new MacBook Pro 16-inch drivers were apparently too new to be able to run Boot Camp.

According to LifeHacker, using Boot Camp is really easy:

As part of the Boot Camp process, you’ll need to make sure you’ve downloaded an .ISO of the latest Windows 10 version, and you’ll want to make sure you have at least 40GB or so of free space on your drive for the new Windows partition.

Other than that, setting up Windows 10 on your MacBook is a pretty easy process. Don’t forget to hold down Option when you’re booting up your MacBook so you can quickly switch to one operating system or the other (or set your default startup disk for whatever you normally use via System Preferences).

Boot Camp Assistance works the best when your MacBook has the latest MacOS version. To verify you have it, go to the Apple Menu, then click on the Software Update.

Realtek Driver Won’t Work on Windows 10 – Here’s a Fix

If you use Realtek Bluetooth drivers, you may be having issues with updating your Windows 10 operating system. That itself is due to the safeguard hold that was put into place in May of 2019 by Microsoft because of outdated driver versions. Microsoft states, “You will need to update to driver version 1.5.1012 or later to remove this safeguard hold. Any earlier version of the driver is affected by this issue.”

On November 15th, however, Microsoft removed the hold with affected versions, according to their statement on Microsoft Docs. And you can install Windows 10 after updating the Realtek Bluetooth drivers. This process can take up to 48 hours, so don’t be discouraged if you’re not able to install right away.

If you need to download and install the drivers manually to disable the compatibility hold, here’s the step-by-step process:

• Download both of the Realtek Bluetooth radio drivers to your preferred folder: Driver 1Driver 2Note: We recommend downloading them to your Documents folder.
• Open File Explorer. If there is no file explorer icon in the task bar, select the search box and enter file explorer and select it.
• Within File Explorer, go the the Documents folder or the folder you downloaded the drivers to.

• Select CTRL+a on the keyboard. This should select all of the files
• Right click or long press on any of the files and select Extract.
• Select the New folder button and rename it Realtek Bluetooth.
• Select the Extract button.
• In File Explorer, select the back  button to go to the location you downloaded the drivers into.
• Find and double click or double tap on the file named f2748416-7753-49c6-9185-56f4986f490b_e98e0d664b7e874011b8e3752046ca61f3475295.cab
• Select CTRL+a on the keyboard. This should select all of the files
• Right click or long press on any of the files and select Extract.
• If you are in the folder named Realtek Bluetooth, then select the New folder button and type Realtek Bluetooth 2.
• Select the Extract button.
• In the search box on the taskbar, enter device manager, then select Device Manager.
• Find Bluetooth and expand it.
• Find the Realtek device and right-click or long press on it.
• Select Update Driver from the context menu.
• Select the Browse my computer for driver software button.
• It should default to your Documents folder, if this is where you saved the drivers then just select the Next button. If you did not save the drivers to your Documents folder, select the Browse button and find the folder you downloaded the drivers to and select OK.
• It should now find the updated drivers and install them. Wait for this to complete and select Close.

Safari Users can Enable DuckDuckGo Privacy Extension

Protection is key!

Enhancing your privacy setting are essential when you surf the web. Extensions are equipped to help you out with that need. Just recently, DuckDuckGo privacy extension was disabled due to incompatibility with Safari web browser, but is available for Chrome and Firefox.

Today, DuckDuckGo announced that it has finally enabled it again for Safari and is ready to use. They wrote:

“Millions of Firefox and Chrome users rely on DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, our desktop browser extension that helps protect you no matter where you go on the web. Today, we’re delighted to announce that the wait is over: DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials is once again available for Safari users!

As you may be aware, major structural changes in Safari 12 meant that we had to remove DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials from the Safari extensions gallery. With Safari 13, new functionality was thankfully added that enabled us to put it back. Consequently, you’ll need Safari 13+ on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or newer to install the updated version.”

You can use DuckDuckGo for your preferred search option by clicking on the magnifying glass icon in a new tab, and choosing DuckDuckGo. This feature will allow you to search and browse discreetly. Please note that this private essentials extension is only available for desktop. If you would like the same for your mobile devices, you can download the browser app for iOS or Android.

Download Folder Removed from Disk Cleanup

To free up hard disk space on computers, users often refer to Windows 10 Disk Cleanup. This will remove any unnecessary files cluttering your hard drive and free up for future needed files.

Tuesday, Brandon LeBlanc from Windows Insiders announced that they will be removing the Download option from Disk Cleanup. He writes in a released statement, “Based on feedback, we’ve decided to remove the downloads folder from disk cleanup.”

The feedback responses included many users challenging the necessity of having the option to remove files from the Downloads folder. Too many of them accidentally selected it and ‘OK’ed the disk cleanup, only to find that there were indeed files in the folder that they needed.

There’s no word as to when this change will occur, but it’s speculated that the next patch will follow through for Disk Cleanup for Windows 10.
