Apple Stores are Closed until May 2020

Apple stores will remain closed for the U.S., Apple announced. Deirdre O’Brien, the Apple Senior Vice President of Retail and People shared this to workers in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to Bloomberg.com, she stated that Apple will continue to, “monitor local conditions for every Apple facility on a daily basis” and that the company will make “reopening decisions on the basis of thorough, thoughtful reviews and the latest guidance from local governments and public health experts.”

Around 270 total stores nationwide are affected by the closing. However, work-from-home will continue to stay in tact until stores get the go to open their doors again.

Earlier last month, O’Brien had mentioned that stores could open as early as the beginning of April. Because of how heavy the U.S. has been hit with the pandemic, the decision was changed and extended.

Tech Companies Donating to Health Workers

Worldwide companies are banding together to help the healthcare professionals with supplies for the pandemic.

Tech companies are pitching in to help with the Coronavirus pandemic. According to Cnet, Intel and Apple have supplied millions of masks for those in the healthcare industry to help the fight against COVID-19.

“We will donate masks, gloves, face shields and other gear that we have sourced from our factory stock and emergency supplies, and we’ll continue to look for additional sources of personal protective equipment that we can source and donate as quickly as possible to meet our commitment of more than a million items,” said the director of Global Public Affairs for Intel in a press release yesterday.

The Trump administration announced Apple’s plans to contribute to the cause as well. 2 million industrial masks were committed by Apple to assist healthcare workers to avoid the spread of this virus. Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple also tweeted throughout the week that they were pledging $15 million during this troubling time. This assistance included a large amount of medical supplies to Italy. Facebook has also added to this donation with 750,000 masks.

Possible Future Features for iOS and MacOS

According to MacRumors, Apple is in the process of working on certain features for your messages. It’s possible that this could end up in the upcoming iOS and MacOS software update.

The first feature would allow you to tag your friends in messages. When you use the @ sign, you could choose from your friends list in group chats. This tagging component can also be seen in Slack, an online platform for work groups in replacement of e-mail.

The second feature would allow you to withdraw texts from your chat. A text would replace your retracted text, stating that the message has been removed. This specific one is similar to WhatsApp, a Facebook owned messaging app. Many Apple users seem to believe that adding this feature would be a waste of time, as you can use other apps in the same way.

Of course, we won’t know for sure if these features will be available in the upcoming update, or ever, really. Apple Insider shared on their blog, “The one Apple release that gets barely any rumors is also the one we can be pretty certain about when we’ll get it. Barring major changes, iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 will be unveiled at WWDC in June 2020. They will then both go into a developer beta preview period, followed very shortly after by a public beta. And finally they will be released at least in time to come pre-installed on the new 2020 iPhones and iPads announced in September.”

Installing Windows 10 on MacBook is Now Available

Although it sounds a bit abnormal – installing Windows 10 to a MacBook – it is now a thing.

Apple recently fixed a problem with the boot utility Boot Camp Assistance that allows other operating systems to be used on their computers. The new MacBook Pro 16-inch drivers were apparently too new to be able to run Boot Camp.

According to LifeHacker, using Boot Camp is really easy:

As part of the Boot Camp process, you’ll need to make sure you’ve downloaded an .ISO of the latest Windows 10 version, and you’ll want to make sure you have at least 40GB or so of free space on your drive for the new Windows partition.

Other than that, setting up Windows 10 on your MacBook is a pretty easy process. Don’t forget to hold down Option when you’re booting up your MacBook so you can quickly switch to one operating system or the other (or set your default startup disk for whatever you normally use via System Preferences).

Boot Camp Assistance works the best when your MacBook has the latest MacOS version. To verify you have it, go to the Apple Menu, then click on the Software Update.

Safari Users can Enable DuckDuckGo Privacy Extension

Protection is key!

Enhancing your privacy setting are essential when you surf the web. Extensions are equipped to help you out with that need. Just recently, DuckDuckGo privacy extension was disabled due to incompatibility with Safari web browser, but is available for Chrome and Firefox.

Today, DuckDuckGo announced that it has finally enabled it again for Safari and is ready to use. They wrote:

“Millions of Firefox and Chrome users rely on DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials, our desktop browser extension that helps protect you no matter where you go on the web. Today, we’re delighted to announce that the wait is over: DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials is once again available for Safari users!

As you may be aware, major structural changes in Safari 12 meant that we had to remove DuckDuckGo Privacy Essentials from the Safari extensions gallery. With Safari 13, new functionality was thankfully added that enabled us to put it back. Consequently, you’ll need Safari 13+ on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or newer to install the updated version.”

You can use DuckDuckGo for your preferred search option by clicking on the magnifying glass icon in a new tab, and choosing DuckDuckGo. This feature will allow you to search and browse discreetly. Please note that this private essentials extension is only available for desktop. If you would like the same for your mobile devices, you can download the browser app for iOS or Android.

Update iPhone or iPad to Avoid GPS Issues

If you have an iPhone or iPad made in 2012 or earlier, you will want to read this. This Sunday, November 3rd, GPS disruptions will occur if you do not have your Apple devices updated to the latest software.

According to Apple Support, “Starting just before 12:00 a.m. UTC on November 3, 2019,* some iPhone and iPad models introduced in 2012 and earlier will require an iOS update to maintain accurate GPS location. This is due to the GPS time rollover issue that began affecting GPS-enabled products from other manufacturers on April 6, 2019. Affected Apple devices are not impacted until just before 12:00 a.m. UTC on November 3, 2019.”

The software version should be 10.3.4 or 9.3.6. To check if you have one of these numbers, simply open up the Settings app and go to General, then About. The Software Version is the second down, under your name.

Apple iOS 13.2 Beta 4 Version

Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg author shared a tweet on October 23rd, sharing information about the beta update available in iOS. Though there isn’t an exact date, this one will be released to the public by the end of October.

This particular version should only be used by those who have devices that can support the beta development. The iOS 13.2 fixes bugs, includes features like new emojis, and gives some quality improvement. 9to5Mac shared:

“Aside for new emoji, iOS 13.2 also includes the Announce Messages with Siri feature that was originally meant for iOS 13.

With AirPods or other H1-enabled Beats headphones in your ears, you will be able to listen and respond to incoming text messages. Siri transcribes the message so you can hear the text without looking at your phone or watch. You can then ignore or immediately reply without having to say “Hey, Siri.”

iOS 13.1.3 Update Fixes Bluetooth

On Monday, we posted about iOS 13.1.2 update causing major problems with Bluetooth. However, today Apple released a small update to fix not only Bluetooth, but a handful more of other issues including calls, iCloud, and more.

Source: Apple Support

Although this update seems to be going okay for some, many users are still having incoming call problems. One Twitter user tagged Apple Support in their post, writing, “I also Have Calls Droping Issue in My IPhone 8 Plus and the Cellular Data is Completely Low and not Working !” Apple Support replied with, “Thanks for following up. Does this happen with every call? Let’s go to Settings and turn on Airplane Mode, wait five seconds, then turn it off. Does the issue persist? If so, let us know in DM.”

It seems that Apple is having one problem after another with iOS 13. Fingers crossed they can get this all sorted out as quickly as possible.

iOS 13.1.2 Update is Out and here is the Scoop

The latest software updates are out for the Apple Mac, Watch, iPhone and iPad. Version 13.1.2 is out on iOS and iPadOS. Here’s what it entails:

This update corrects issues for:
  • Camera
  • Flashlight
  • Bluetooth
  • iCloud Backup
  • Shortcuts
  • Calibration Data

Should you Update?

Despite the attempted corrections for iOS 13.1.2, users continue to have problems. And the problems keep stacking against Apple. One Twitter user tweeted, “There is big issue with Bluetooth connection. Can’t use Bluetooth hands free. You should have done proper testing around it. Disappointed to see Apple product with such defects”. however, Apple Support had reached out, and is continuing to reply to tweets trying to make amends to those having issues with call drops.

So as far as updating, it may be a better idea to hold off until the next one.

Apple needs to get these problems sorted out for iOS 13 asap.
