Back Up Your Computer

Because of all of the essential papers, images, and other files saved on your computer, a failed hard drive is one of the worst things that might happen to it. Backing up your computer is widely suggested by both Mac and Microsoft technical help, and it will substantially relieve your stress. It’s also really easy to do!

For Macs:

You can either use iCloud or Macs backup feature, Time Machine. From there, you can reestablish any lost or accidental deleting from your computers’ hard drive. This is an easy go-to without the hassle of purchasing an external hard drive. However, when Time Machine is full, the oldest saved files will be removed. And if your computer is ever stolen or destroyed, you’ll lose everything.

For Microsoft:

Grab yourself an external hard drive and connect it to your computer to allow it access to your files. Back up your computer by using File History:

  1. Start Menu
  2. Settings
  3. Navigate and Update Security
  4. Backup

Widespread Computer Issues- Revisited

Back in 2013, we shared this blog post, explaining the most known issues in the computer world. This is simply a re-post, in hopes to remind users of a few computer issues and how to fix them.

What’s the strange WHIRRING NOISE coming from inside your PC? Most likely this is a sign of an overtaxed or dying FAN. Your fan may have come loose or may have become clogged with dirt and dust, decreasing its effectiveness and requiring it to work harder than it should have to. Thus, it is vital to clean out any dirt and debris that may obstruct the computer’s ventilation.

A non-functional fan can potentially cause OVERHEATING as well. All components of a computer demand appropriate and sufficient ventilation and cooling, as they generate heat during operation. When you are dealing with any kind of odd computer noise it is of utmost importance to perform a backup of all valuable, irreplaceable files saved on the system’s hard drive.

Although clicking sounds are the predominant, ominous indicators of a HARD DRIVE CRASH, failing to acknowledge other strange noises as a sign of a potentially serious issue could result in catastrophic data loss. There are many possible causes for hard drive failure, including overheating, faulty air filter, power surges, violent vibration, static electricity, mechanical failure and virus infection.

Your PC’s longevity is top priority!

How to Check All Storage Devices on your Computer

The Windows 10 May Update included many features, bug fixes, and more. One specific update was the Storage page only showing the main drive space, even if you have multiple drives.

But they can be easily found on the Storage page, under the More Storage Settings heading: View storage usage on other drives. Any detected drives will show up with your storage information.

Here’s how to get to it:

  1. Start Menu
  2. Settings
  3. Storage

On top of that, you can also click on each device to get a breakdown of what is taking up space. This can contain pictures, apps, games, documents, and more. Knowing this information can help you free up storage, so your computer will run better.

Who Still Uses Old Windows Operating Systems?

Although Microsoft’s computer operating system was released in 2009 and will soon be three main versions out of date, many people continue to use it.

Back in January of this year, a survey was conducted by StatCounter:

This report specifically targets Windows users and excludes macOS and Linux from the runnings.

StatCounter gets its numbers by checking visitors to specific websites and taking note of which operating system they used to visit. It’s not a perfect measurement. It doesn’t count computers without an internet connection or ones that never visited the websites StatCounter watched; however, it’s a fairly good estimate of what people are using.

Out of all the Windows operating systems, StatCounter recorded 18.03 percent of them running Windows 7 in December 2020. Surprisingly, this is a great deal more than the people using its predecessor Windows 8.1, which came in at 3.95 percent.

Why don’t users just upgrade?

Both operating systems have essentially identical hardware requirements, most users can update for free, and Windows 10 will provide a familiar user experience. There’s no particular reason as to why Windows 7 users don’t just upgrade their operating systems.

Simply put: They don’t want to deal with the hassle.

However, with Windows 7’s end of support, not upgrading your PC could potentially cause more harm than good. This leaves open vulnerabilities for hackers to steal any personal information you have on the computer.

Wifi is slow, but why?

With the amount of wi-fi gadgets in our homes, even the tiniest imperfections can have an affect on its performance. There could be a number of hindering culprits.

Here are a few ideas:

Did you know that WIFI speeds are affected by solid objects? Placing your Router in an open area can help the fluidity of speed to your devices.

In addition to computers, phones, and tablets, you’ll also find smart TVs, game consoles, media streaming sticks, smart home hubs connected to WIFI. Get rid of those that are not necessarily needed to boost your speed.

Often times, it’s as simple as unplugging/disconnecting your router from the wall for about 30 seconds. This allows it to readjust and reset.

Other cases involve a bad router. When the connection is bad and speeds have dropped, replacing your router could be the best solution to this problem.

What it Means When Your Computer Freezes

If your computer freezes, it could be a software or a hardware problem.

When devices are frozen, it means the windows on the screen have stopped responding. Everything has become at a stand-still. This can be quite frustrating to users, especially when working remotely or finishing up daily online schooling.

The easiest remedy comes as simply restarting your computer. Sometimes, that may not help. Here are a few reasons why your PC freezes up:

Software Issues

Updating any and all software is crucial to keeping your PC running smoothly. If your operating system is out-of-date, this could cause frozen windows. Make certain all applications are legitimate. Any malware can also hinder its performance.

Your Windows OS, or any other operating system you have installed, may be corrupted. If that’s the case, uninstall them, and re-install. We wrote a blog post recently about an unsupported Windows 11 OS that could spell disaster if downloaded and installed.

“With their exciting news, rumors have spread to allow users to download the unfinished, not-yet-announced Windows 11. The build leaked overseas, and Microsoft has expressed to users not to do so. On top of that, hackers have been busy taking advantage of this opportunity.”

Hardware Issues

Defective hardware can create malfunctions to the performance. Overheating can potentially disturb the quality of a PC. Fans are designed to keep them cool. All devices require ease of airflow to keep the fans running properly.

Also, any recent installations of components need to be considered a likely culprit. Try removing them to see if that’s the issue.

What Happens When Your PC reboots Randomly

A computer shutting down or restarting can be caused by a variety of factors. The three most common are a faulty power supply, a bad motherboard, or a laptop that overheats.

Remember, If it’s merely shutting off, it’s most likely due to overheating.

Your power supply may run out at any time. All of your hardware components are powered by the electrical supply. It can simply switch off if things aren’t going smoothly. Replacing them is quite cheap.

The worst-case scenario, which is sadly the most prevalent, is motherboard failure. Random shutdowns, restarts, and Windows problems may result as a result of this. At home, there is no practical method to inspect the motherboard. It is the most difficult element to repair when it breaks. Unfortunately, everything else is tied to it.

Incompatible or outdated drivers might sometimes be the source of the problem. This is especially if it began after a recent update or upgrade. The most common reason of unexpected restarts is your graphics card driver. As a result, remove the graphics card driver and allow Windows to obtain the most compatible drivers.

Is Your Device Not Turning On?

No matter how many times you push the power button to switch on your computer, no light appears and your monitor remains dark. This can be quite the conundrum for users, and confusing to say the least.

Here are a couple ways you may be able to remedy the situation:

First, double-check your power cable.

Check that it is correctly inserted and that there is power in the electrical socket where it is plugged in. Whether that works, you should grab a multimeter and check the power switch to see if it works as well. Remove all RAM and disconnect any devices linked to your PC.

If it still does not function and your power switch and power cord are both fine, test the power supply.

Clean it up

Clean the circuit board. Pay careful attention to the area surrounding the CPU, for any potential shorts, burn marks, and so on. Use a soft brush to dust off any kind of debris seen. If you find any burns on the motherboard, it needs to be replaced.

Unsupported Windows 11 Could Spell Trouble

Microsoft recommends you not download Windows 11 early

If you plan on updating your operating system to Windows 11 this fall, you will want to check your computer. The reasoning behind this is the upcoming OS will only be supported if it has the correct supported hardware.

  • Unsupported devices have 52% more kernel mode crashes (Blue Screen of Death errors). On the other hand, compatible devices provide a 99.8% crash-free experience.
  • On unsupported devices, app hangs are 17% more likely. For first-party apps, Microsoft observed 43% more crashes. -Source: Microsoft

If your computer does not have the right hardware, it will have limited support, or won’t be supported at all. Microsoft maintains its stance on Windows 11 requirements. They stated clearly that only supported devices will receive the new operating system. An unsupported operating system could, unfortunately, increase the risk of BSOD (black screen of death) or other technical errors.

If you ignore Microsoft’s advice and run the officially unsupported operating system on your device, you may not receive any quality updates via Windows Update. Microsoft officials have said that they couldn’t guarantee these devices would get monthly updates like cumulative or optional updates.

Ventilating Your Computer

Computers require ventilation and fans to ensure its hardware’s longevity. Overheated components can cause the PC to crash and fail. This could result in loss of data and personal information.

Dust Buildup

Over time, dust builds in computer cases and even laptops. This causes obstructing fans and restricting air movement. Unfortunately, trapping heat and preventing your PC from adequately cooling itself could cause even bigger problems. Clean your computer’s casing on a regular basis.

Now, if dust isn’t clogging it but it’s still overheating, the fan may not be working properly. It may need replaced, or it might have just come unplugged.

Another tip to remember is to keep the room clutter-free and cool. Make sure nothing is blocking the vents or fans. A warm environment could spell disaster for your computer. Humidity often becomes a culprit of PC issues.

Prolonged exposure to high humidity corrodes the components inside your computer, similar to the way damp air on a rainy day rusts metal left outdoors. When the computer’s metal and electronic pieces corrode, they can lose their conductivity, resulting in short circuits or complete computer failure. Computers should be kept in areas where the humidity level is around 45-50%. Keep them away from humidifiers and damp areas like bathrooms to prevent corrosion.

Temperature Changes

Like the inside, it’s best not to leave your device out in the sun. Doing so can also ruin the battery. Sources say to keep the temperature within 70-80 degrees. Apple says their devices include an automatic regulation, shown below:

iPhones come with a temperature sensor, so if the device overheats it sends a notification to the user. It immediately pauses any phone activity until the temperature drops.
