macOS Update to Fix USB-C Hub Issues

Apple issued an update on macOS to fix a USB-C problem with MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.

According to Apple Support, it states, “macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 prevents MacBook Pro (2019 or later) and MacBook Air (2020 or later) models from incurring damage when they are connected to certain third-party, non-compliant powered USB-C hubs and docks.”

Newer MacBooks are seemingly becoming unresponsive when third-party USB-C hubs are connected to the laptop. This particular Big Sur OS update will improve this case.

It’s encouraged to download and install this update to be safe. You can find the the Software Update under System Preferences.

MacOS New Battery Life Feature

MacBooks are getting a game-changer with their battery life. Apple is currently in the works with Catalina 10.15.5. This update will include an awesome feature called Battery Health Management.

According to SixColors, this particular feature will be available on 2016 MacBook Pros, along with Retina MacBook Airs.

The feature works by analyzing the temperature of the battery over time, as well as the charging pattern the laptop has experienced—in other words, does the laptop frequently get drained most of the way and then recharged fully, or is it mostly kept full and plugged in? In the latter case, Battery Health Management is more likely to stop a bit short of full capacity in order to extend the battery’s long-term lifespan. (All charging data is kept private on the MacBook unless the Mac has been opted in to share anonymous analytics data with Apple.)

Leaving your Macbook, or any other laptop for that matter, on the charger after it’s hit 100% can dramatically harm the battery life. Apple continues to work its magic on extending its batteries as long as possible. This upcoming feature will be the default option to all Macbooks. However, this will also be an option. You’ll have the ability to select which battery life option according to your liking.

It’s possible to get anywhere from 8-13 hours of battery life on a single use, depending on what you do on your laptop.

MacOS Update Hiccups with Crashes

If your Macbook has updated to Catalina OS 10.15.4 and you’ve experienced crashes, you’re not alone.

Yesterday, many users blew up Twitter about their issues. Since the update release, many Macbooks have crashed after being woken up from sleep mode. Although they have reached out to users on Twitter, Apple Support has yet to respond to this bug in an announcement.

One Twitter user stated, “Brand new 64gb macbook Pro and same issue. Nothing installed vanilla just got, instantly crashing. One thing open was Safari on BBC homepage. Left 15 mins came back crashed. Continously since. Installed stuff same. Reformat same. Big problems unusable.”

However, after scanning through Twitter feed, one user said that they were able to disable automatic graphics switching.

It’s completely unclear if that will work for every Macbook user who is currently experiencing issues. But it may seem like it’s worth a try.

Apple Stores are Closed until May 2020

Apple stores will remain closed for the U.S., Apple announced. Deirdre O’Brien, the Apple Senior Vice President of Retail and People shared this to workers in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

According to Bloomberg.com, she stated that Apple will continue to, “monitor local conditions for every Apple facility on a daily basis” and that the company will make “reopening decisions on the basis of thorough, thoughtful reviews and the latest guidance from local governments and public health experts.”

Around 270 total stores nationwide are affected by the closing. However, work-from-home will continue to stay in tact until stores get the go to open their doors again.

Earlier last month, O’Brien had mentioned that stores could open as early as the beginning of April. Because of how heavy the U.S. has been hit with the pandemic, the decision was changed and extended.

Possible Future Features for iOS and MacOS

According to MacRumors, Apple is in the process of working on certain features for your messages. It’s possible that this could end up in the upcoming iOS and MacOS software update.

The first feature would allow you to tag your friends in messages. When you use the @ sign, you could choose from your friends list in group chats. This tagging component can also be seen in Slack, an online platform for work groups in replacement of e-mail.

The second feature would allow you to withdraw texts from your chat. A text would replace your retracted text, stating that the message has been removed. This specific one is similar to WhatsApp, a Facebook owned messaging app. Many Apple users seem to believe that adding this feature would be a waste of time, as you can use other apps in the same way.

Of course, we won’t know for sure if these features will be available in the upcoming update, or ever, really. Apple Insider shared on their blog, “The one Apple release that gets barely any rumors is also the one we can be pretty certain about when we’ll get it. Barring major changes, iOS 14 and iPadOS 14 will be unveiled at WWDC in June 2020. They will then both go into a developer beta preview period, followed very shortly after by a public beta. And finally they will be released at least in time to come pre-installed on the new 2020 iPhones and iPads announced in September.”

CISA Urges Mozilla Users to Update Browser

The status shows critical

If you are a Mozilla user, be sure to make sure your browser is updated. The United States Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a warning post on January 8th. This warning is not to be taken lightly. On their website, they state the following:

Mozilla has released security updates to address a vulnerability in Firefox, Firefox ESR, and Thunderbird. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to take control of an affected system. This vulnerability was detected in exploits in the wild.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) encourages users and administrators to review the Mozilla Security Advisories for Firefox 72.0.1 and Firefox ESR 68.4.1 and Thunderbird 68.4.1 and apply the necessary updates.

Mozilla knows about this recent attack, and is also encouraging users to update their browser, claiming the impact to be critical. According to Mozilla, critical means, ” Vulnerability can be used to run attacker code and install software, requiring no user interaction beyond normal browsing.”

On a Mac, simply launch Firefox and click About, then Firefox and click Restart to update Firefox.

On a PC, launch Firefox and go under either Options, then Firefox Updates.

Installing Windows 10 on MacBook is Now Available

Although it sounds a bit abnormal – installing Windows 10 to a MacBook – it is now a thing.

Apple recently fixed a problem with the boot utility Boot Camp Assistance that allows other operating systems to be used on their computers. The new MacBook Pro 16-inch drivers were apparently too new to be able to run Boot Camp.

According to LifeHacker, using Boot Camp is really easy:

As part of the Boot Camp process, you’ll need to make sure you’ve downloaded an .ISO of the latest Windows 10 version, and you’ll want to make sure you have at least 40GB or so of free space on your drive for the new Windows partition.

Other than that, setting up Windows 10 on your MacBook is a pretty easy process. Don’t forget to hold down Option when you’re booting up your MacBook so you can quickly switch to one operating system or the other (or set your default startup disk for whatever you normally use via System Preferences).

Boot Camp Assistance works the best when your MacBook has the latest MacOS version. To verify you have it, go to the Apple Menu, then click on the Software Update.
