Remote access to other computers is quite the handy feature to have when it comes to helping those having issues with their PC. And with the COVID-19 pandemic, more and more people are relying on remote accessing.

There are a handful of Remote Access Applications out there, such as TeamViewer and Chrome Remote Desktop. These are free and easy to use. However, Windows 10 has it’s own remote access feature available.

Quick Assist allows others you trust have access to your computer. It’s secured and only requires a Microsoft account.

To access Quick Assist, follow the prompts below:
  1. Start Menu
  2. Type in Quick Assist and click on it
  3. From there, you can Get assistance or Give assistance
  4. Giving Assistance requires a signed in Microsoft account and will give a 6 digit code to provide to the one receiving assistance
  5. Receiving Assistance requires the 6 digit code in the box provided. Then click on Share screen.

It is recommended not to have any personal data shown or anything you don’t want the remote assistance to see. Quick Assist will prompt a permission box.

4 Reasons Why You Should Clear Cache off Your PC

On Windows 10, there are three sorts of caches that require your attention from time to time. The word “cache” refers to a section of your hard disk devoted to saving browser files that your browser believes it may need to utilize again. These include temporary files, internet browsing, and file explorer. And while these aren’t necessarily bad, there are reasons as to why you should clear caches once in a while.

Files, CSS styles, JavaScript scripts, pictures, and other multimedia material will be saved by your browser. As a result, when you work with a web development business and request updates, it’s important to clear your cache often in order to view these changes automatically.

Like we stated earlier, cache isn’t undoubtedly terrible. However, these caches can accumulate over time, causing them to corrupt and creating system-wide problems. This can lead to slower response times. When you clear your cache, it should speed up your computer.

A third reason comes with security. If your computer become subjected to vulnerabilities, the information stored could be stolen. And with hacker enhancements over the years, finding a way would be simple for them.

When it comes to clearing browser cache, it’s simple and fast to do. Often times, browsers send errors, such as loading issues. Clearing your cache potentially could resolve that problem.

How to Uninstall Updates on Windows 10

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began, Microsoft has released a handful of troublesome updates to its users. The most recent one, Windows 10 KB4556799, has issued a plethora of problems – including the Blue Screen of Death and reverting back to default settings. There’s no telling how many users are being affected by this issue. However, if you are one of them, the best thing to do is to uninstall the update.

Uninstalling problematic updates is pretty simple and will help get your computer back up to working order.

Here’s how to uninstall updates:
  1. Go to Start Menu
  2. Settings
  3. Update & Security
  4. Under Check for updates, click on View update history
  5. Click on Uninstall updates

This will open up a window showing all of the updates, with the most recent on top. From there, click on the update needing to be uninstalled, right click it, and choose uninstall. If there are certain KB (Knowledge Base) number updates that are needing to be uninstalled, using the Search Installed Updates box in the top right corner of the control panel window is a convenient and quick way of finding it.

It is encouraged that you write down any KB numbers, as they may be needed later on.

How to Fix Windows 11 Update Error

Wanting to update your computer to Windows 11, but you see the following error, “This PC Doesn’t Currently Meet All the System Requirements for Windows 11”? Unfortunately, the brand new Windows 11 operating system isn’t available to all Microsoft users.

However, if your computer is compatible, yet you’re still seeing the error, here’s why:

A new issue in the media creation tool and Windows update is restricting suitable customers from switching to Windows 11.

As the issue is prevalent when using the Media Creation tool or Windows update, the known fix is to simply use another upgrade method from Microsoft.

We recommend you start with the new Installation Assistant from Microsoft which is a dedicated utility developed to help you easily upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

You can use this comprehensive guide from us to use the Installation Assistant to update your OS directly. You will need a working internet connection to update using the same.

If Update Assistant doesn’t seem to fit your requirements or if it presents you with the same error, then we recommend you use a Windows 11 ISO instead. Microsoft has also released dedicated ISOs for the new OS and you can upgrade using the same by following this guide.

Go to the Microsoft Website

If you head over to the Microsoft website and scroll down close to the bottom of the page, you’ll find “Check for compatibility”. From there, they give you the option of downloading what’s called the PC health check app.

Several users may see the “Error” message. Thankfully, you will still be able to receive Windows 10 updates. Also, keep in mind that the Windows 10 OS’s end-of-life date isn’t until 2025.

Creating a Child Account on Windows OS

With the recent global pandemic, more and more people are relying on the internet for work and other resources. Kids are also dependent on computers to help with schooling. And with all the amount of resources available to them, parents can easily become concerned. Restrictions need to be in place.

Windows OS allows you to add child accounts with parental controls set in place to block unwanted websites.

First, to create a child account, follow the steps below:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Accounts
  3. Family & other users
  4. Click the Add a family member, under Your Family
  5. Click Add a child, enter their e-mail address (if applicable), and click Next
  6. Click Confirm

An e-mail will be sent to the address provided, requesting them to join to complete the addition process.

Second, to block websites, follow the steps below:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Accounts
  3. Family and other users
  4. Click Manage family settings online, located under Add a family member
  5. Click on More options
  6. On the drop-down menu, click on Content restrictions
  7. Click on Block inappropriate websites to turn it on

Turning on the Block inappropriate websites will block all adult websites. This will turn your SafeSearch on, which is quite the handy feature on Windows 10. You can also add websites that you want to allow, and add websites that you want to block. This is optional, however.

When kids attempt to access any websites that are on the blocked list, an Ask for permission box will pop up. This will state that they will need to request permission from an adult family member to access the website. This gives parents complete control on whether or not they want to approve it.

The Importance of Multi Factor Authentication

Last month, the RSA had their security conference, and Microsoft shared quite the alarming statistic about user accounts.

They stated that while 95% of users are protected, there’s still 5% that remains compromised. This 5% is what hackers feed upon. And while 5% of users doesn’t seem like a big number, that rounds out to be around 1.2 million logins every month.

Not only that, but Microsoft engineers said that most, if not all, of these risked accounts are not using MFA, or multi-factor authentication. This system allows a lower risk of a possible compromise to your account – which is incredibly important to any personal information you may have stored. For Office 365 users, set up a 2-step verification here.

Using multi-factor authentication is one of the easiest and most effective ways to increase the security of your organization. It’s easier than it sounds – when you log in, multi-factor authentication means you’ll type a code from your phone to get access to Microsoft 365. This can prevent hackers from taking over if they know your password. Multi-factor authentication is also called 2-step verification. Individuals can add 2-step verification to most accounts easily, for example, to their Google or Microsoft accounts.

Windows 10 Ransomware E-Mails – Do NOT Download

If you get an e-mail telling you to install Windows 10 updates, simply delete it.

Newly discovered malware is asking victims to update to the most recent version of Windows 10. ‘Install Latest Microsoft Windows Update immediately!’ or ‘Critical Microsoft Windows Update!’ appears in the subject line, and when you open it, a file extension attachment appears for you to click on.

This malicious download will infect any computer that downloads the “.jpg” file extension. TechRadar reported that the download, “encrypts all of the files on the infected user’s system and appends their filenames with its own file extension, 777. A ransom note with the filename ‘Cyborg_DECRYPT.txt’ is then left on the desktop of the compromised machine. Finally, the ransomware leaves a copy of itself called ‘bot.exe’ hidden at the root of the infected drive.”

The GitHub file name

The file is called ‘bitcoingenerator.exe’ and the GitHub account is named “misterbtc2020”. This ransomware locks your PC and your files, encrypted. For a ransom, you can receive your files as decrypted.

Make sure your antivirus is up to date on your computer to avoid any and all malicious cyber attacks. Also, remember that Windows 10 updates only push through its operating system and not through e-mails.

How To Disable Background Apps

If you have Windows 10, this is an important tip to know.

Background Apps, by default, are allowed to run even if they’re not being used. This means they’re affecting battery life, collecting information, and can download/install updates.

While this may not seem a problem to some, other users may want to disable it. Here’s what you do:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Click on Privacy
  3. Find Background Apps
  4. Turn off the “Let apps run in the background” option.

You also have the option of turning on/off individual applications, instead of turning all of them off as a whole.

Hibernation Issues on Windows 10

Hibernation in Windows causes issues on some PCs. What should you do?

Simply hold down the power button until the machine shuts down entirely to restart it. Even if you turn off your laptop, it may not turn off. To turn it off in this situation, you must remove the battery. It will not function if it is linked to the wall.

If the problem persists after your computer has been restored to normal operation, you should disable hibernation. To access the power choices, go to the control panel and then to the power options. Change to “Never” in the “Hibernate” section, if it’s available. You may also use the standby mode.

If you don’t see the “Hibernate” option, you’ll find “Sleep” instead. Click on the Start Menu, select Power, and click the Sleep option.

All operating apps and documents are stored in RAM during standby, while they are stored on the hard drive during hibernation.

This [Sleep] uses very little power, your PC starts up faster, and you’re instantly back to where you left off. You don’t have to worry that you’ll lose your work because of your battery draining, because Windows automatically saves all your work and turns off the PC if the battery is too low. Use sleep when you’re going to be away from your PC for just a little while—like when you’re taking a coffee break.

Did you know? Hibernation mode consumes less battery power, but restarting the machine takes significantly longer.

If you always plug your computer into a power source, you might want to disable the standby and hibernation modes since you don’t need them when you’re connected.
